The largest portfolio digitization project in the Netherlands
WoonFriesland is one of the largest housing associations in the Netherlands, managing 21,000 units across the Friesland province. The scale alone made comprehensive inspection a logistical challenge — but the real complexity was community relations. Flying drones near people's homes raises understandable concerns about privacy, noise, and disruption.
Previous large-scale inspection programs by other housing associations had generated resident complaints and negative press coverage. WoonFriesland needed complete portfolio digitization, but not at the cost of the trust they'd built with their residents over decades.
Aeroscan developed a dedicated resident communication portal specifically for the WoonFriesland project — the first of its kind. Before any flights began, residents in each area received advance notification through multiple channels: letters, the portal, and local community contacts.
The portal gave residents clear information about what was happening, why it was happening, when flights were scheduled in their area, and how to ask questions or raise concerns. A dedicated response team monitored incoming questions and provided same-day answers. Flight schedules were published in advance and adjusted based on resident feedback.
The entire 21,000-unit portfolio was digitized with near-zero complaints from residents. The resident communication model was so successful that it became the standard template for all subsequent large-scale Aeroscan projects. Housing associations across the Netherlands now request the same approach.
For WoonFriesland's maintenance team, the result was transformative: consistent condition data across every single property in their portfolio, accessible through a single platform. Maintenance priorities could be compared apples-to-apples across neighborhoods for the first time. Budget allocation moved from estimation to evidence.
Large-scale drone operations near residential communities require more than technical capability — they require community trust. AerialSpect brings the same resident-first communication protocols to properties across the United States. Whether you manage a 50-unit condo association or a 5,000-unit housing portfolio, we handle the community engagement so you can focus on the data.
The same technology behind these results is now available across the United States.
